Keyword Difficulty

Keyword difficulty is a score, usually on a 0-100 scale, that estimates how hard it would be for a new page to rank in the top organic results for a given keyword. It’s typically calculated based on the authority and quality of the pages currently ranking for that term.

A high keyword difficulty score doesn’t necessarily mean you should avoid a keyword — it means you need a stronger content and link-building strategy to compete for it. Conversely, a low difficulty score can represent a fast-win opportunity, especially for newer or smaller websites building initial traction.

Keyword difficulty should always be weighed against search volume and business relevance. A moderately difficult keyword with strong buying intent is often worth more than an easy keyword nobody with purchasing power is actually searching for.

We factor keyword difficulty into every roadmap we build, prioritizing a mix of quick wins and longer-term authority plays — see our services for how this fits into a full strategy.
