X-Robots-Tag

The X-Robots-Tag is an HTTP header that provides the same crawling and indexing directives as a meta robots tag, but can be applied to any file type, including non-HTML files like PDFs and images that can’t contain an HTML meta tag.

This makes X-Robots-Tag essential for controlling indexing of downloadable documents or media files that would otherwise have no mechanism for search engines to receive noindex or nofollow instructions.

Implementing X-Robots-Tag typically requires server-level configuration rather than simple page editing, making it a more technical, developer-involved SEO control than standard meta tags.

We implement X-Robots-Tag directives where needed within our Technical SEO service.
