A toxic backlink is a link from a low-quality, spammy, or irrelevant website that can potentially harm a site’s search rankings, either by association with a manipulative link scheme or by triggering algorithmic distrust signals.
Common sources of toxic backlinks include link farms, expired domains repurposed purely for link schemes, foreign-language spam sites unrelated to the linked business, and negative SEO attacks where a competitor deliberately builds spammy links to a rival’s site.
While Google has stated it largely ignores most low-quality links rather than actively penalizing sites for them, a large concentration of clearly manipulative toxic links can still trigger closer scrutiny or, in severe cases, contribute to a manual action.
