Passage Indexing

Passage indexing is a Google search capability that allows individual sections, or “passages,” within a longer webpage to rank and be surfaced in search results independently, rather than only evaluating a page’s overall, holistic relevance to a query.

This means a single, specific paragraph deep within an otherwise broad, comprehensive page can rank well for a very specific query, even if the page as a whole isn’t primarily focused on that narrow topic.

Passage indexing reinforces the value of comprehensive, well-organized long-form content with clear headers and structure, since it increases the chances that any individual well-answered subtopic within a larger page can independently earn search visibility.

Structuring content to take advantage of passage indexing is part of our SEO Content Strategy service.
