Out-of-Stock Page Handling

Out-of-stock page handling refers to the SEO strategy for managing product pages when an item is temporarily or permanently unavailable, balancing user experience against the risk of losing valuable, previously-ranking product pages entirely.

Best practices generally recommend keeping temporarily out-of-stock pages live (rather than removing them), clearly communicating unavailability, and suggesting relevant alternative products, preserving the page’s accumulated ranking value for when stock returns.

For permanently discontinued products, a well-planned 301 redirect to a genuinely similar replacement product, or a clear explanation with related alternatives, generally provides a better outcome than simply deleting the page and returning a 404 error.
