A link disavow is a request submitted to Google, via a specific text file uploaded through Search Console, asking Google to ignore certain backlinks when assessing a website’s ranking — typically used to address toxic or manipulative links a site owner can’t get removed directly.
Google has repeatedly stated that most sites don’t need to use the disavow tool, since its algorithms are generally good at ignoring low-quality links without any ranking harm. It’s primarily recommended for sites that have received a manual action related to unnatural links, or that have clear evidence of a targeted negative SEO attack.
Because misuse of the disavow tool (disavowing genuinely valuable links by mistake) can actively harm rankings, it should be used cautiously and only after careful backlink analysis.
