HTTPS (HyperText Transfer Protocol Secure) is the encrypted version of HTTP, the protocol used to transfer data between a user’s browser and a website’s server. It requires an SSL/TLS certificate and protects data like passwords, payment details, and personal information from interception.
Google has confirmed HTTPS as a ranking signal, though a relatively lightweight one on its own. Its bigger impact today is often on user trust and conversion: browsers actively flag non-HTTPS sites as “Not Secure,” which can meaningfully deter visitors, especially on forms or checkout pages.
Migrating from HTTP to HTTPS requires careful handling of 301 redirects across the entire site, along with updating internal links, sitemaps, and canonical tags, to avoid inadvertently splitting ranking signals during the transition.
