Duplicate Content

Duplicate content refers to blocks of content that appear, identically or in near-identical form, across more than one URL — either on the same website or across different websites. It commonly arises from URL parameters, print-friendly page versions, e-commerce product variants, or syndicated content republished without proper attribution.

Contrary to popular belief, Google doesn’t issue a direct “penalty” for most duplicate content. The real problem is that it splits ranking signals across multiple URLs and forces Google to choose which version to show, which is often not the version you’d prefer to rank.

The standard fix is implementing canonical tags to point search engines toward the preferred version, along with consolidating truly duplicate pages wherever possible.

Duplicate content resolution is a standard part of every Technical SEO engagement.
