Backlink

A backlink is a hyperlink from one website pointing to a page on another website. Search engines treat backlinks as a signal of trust and authority — broadly speaking, the more high-quality, relevant sites that link to a page, the more likely search engines are to view it as credible and worth ranking well.

Not all backlinks carry equal weight. A link from a well-established, topically relevant publication carries far more value than dozens of links from low-quality or unrelated sites. Some links also carry a “nofollow” attribute, signaling to search engines not to pass authority through that link at all.

Backlink profiles can also work against a site: a history of spammy or manipulative link-building can trigger search engine penalties. This is why backlink quality, not just quantity, is the core focus of any sustainable link-building strategy.
