Average position is a metric reported in Google Search Console indicating the average ranking position of a webpage across all the search queries it appeared for during a given time period.
Because average position blends performance across many different keywords, some ranking well and others poorly, it should be interpreted carefully — a page could show a mediocre average position while actually ranking extremely well for its most important target keywords and poorly for many minor, less relevant ones.
For a clearer picture, average position is best analyzed at the individual query level within Search Console, rather than relying solely on the blended page-level or site-level average.
