301 Redirect

A 301 redirect is a server-side instruction that permanently sends visitors and search engines from one URL to a different URL. It’s the standard method used when a page has moved, been renamed, or been consolidated into another page.

301 redirects are important for preserving SEO value during a site migration, URL restructuring, or content consolidation. Most of the ranking authority (link equity) built up by the original URL passes through to the new destination, protecting the site from a sudden ranking or traffic loss.

Using the wrong redirect type (like a temporary 302 redirect when a permanent 301 is needed), or creating long redirect chains, can waste crawl budget and dilute the SEO value being passed through — a common issue we catch during technical audits.

Redirect management is a standard part of our Technical SEO and site migration work.
