UTM Parameter

A UTM parameter is a small snippet of text added to the end of a URL, used to track the specific source, medium, or campaign that drove a visitor to a website, commonly used in email newsletters, social media posts, and paid ad campaigns.

While UTM parameters aren’t typically used for organic search traffic itself (since Google Search Console and Analytics already identify organic visits automatically), they’re essential for accurately tracking traffic from other channels that might otherwise get miscategorized.

Consistent, well-structured UTM naming conventions across a marketing team prevent fragmented, hard-to-analyze reporting data caused by inconsistent capitalization or naming choices between different campaigns.
