A URL slug is the portion of a web address that identifies a specific page, appearing after the domain name — for example, in clickmetrica.com/glossary/url-slug/, “url-slug” is the slug.
SEO-friendly slugs are short, descriptive, use hyphens (not underscores) to separate words, and ideally include the target keyword. They should also stay stable over time; changing a page’s slug after it’s already indexed requires a proper 301 redirect from the old URL to avoid losing rankings and traffic.
Avoiding unnecessary parameters, dates, or category strings in slugs (unless functionally necessary) also keeps URLs clean, memorable, and more likely to earn clicks in search results.
URL structure guidelines are part of our standard On-Page SEO recommendations.
