Sitemap Priority Tag

A sitemap priority tag is an optional XML sitemap element that historically allowed site owners to indicate the relative importance of a given URL compared to other URLs on the same site, on a scale from 0.0 to 1.0.

Google has explicitly stated that it largely ignores the priority tag, since site owners can easily misuse or overstate priority values, making it an unreliable signal that doesn’t meaningfully influence crawling or ranking behavior in practice.

Given its limited practical impact, most modern sitemap implementations either omit the priority tag entirely or include it without dedicating significant effort to fine-tuning its values across different pages.
