Search Intent

Search intent refers to the underlying reason or goal behind a person’s search query — what they’re actually trying to accomplish, beyond just the literal words they typed. Search engines have become increasingly sophisticated at interpreting intent, and matching it precisely is now one of the most important factors in ranking well.

Search intent is typically categorized into four types: informational (seeking knowledge), navigational (looking for a specific website), commercial investigation (comparing options before a purchase), and transactional (ready to buy or take action).

Creating content that doesn’t match the dominant intent for a keyword — for example, a long educational blog post targeting a keyword where searchers actually want to buy immediately — will almost always underperform, regardless of content quality.

Mapping content to the correct search intent is the starting point of our SEO Content Strategy service.
