A long-tail keyword is a longer, more specific search phrase, typically consisting of three or more words, that carries lower search volume than a broad “head” term but usually reflects clearer, more specific search intent.
For example, “shoes” is a short-tail keyword with enormous volume and intense competition, while “women’s waterproof hiking boots size 8” is a long-tail keyword with far less volume but a much higher likelihood of converting, since the searcher knows precisely what they want.
Long-tail keywords collectively make up the majority of all search queries, and targeting them strategically is often the fastest path to meaningful organic traffic for newer or smaller websites competing against larger, more established competitors on head terms.
Long-tail keyword targeting is a core part of our SEO Content Strategy service.
