410 Gone

A 410 Gone status code explicitly tells search engines that a page has been intentionally and permanently removed, rather than simply being missing or moved — a more definitive signal than a standard 404 error.

Using a 410 status for pages a business genuinely wants removed from search results (such as discontinued products with no replacement) can lead to faster deindexing compared to a standard 404, since it removes ambiguity about the page’s status.

A 410 should only be used when a page is truly gone forever with no relevant replacement; if a similar page exists, a 301 redirect is generally the better choice to preserve any accumulated ranking value.
